General
The group of breeding and genetics at UGA
is active in cutting-edge research projects for the U.S. industry. We are
sponsored by some of the largest U.S. breeding companies and institutions in
beef, dairy, swine and poultry. We have international contacts with leading
research centers worldwide. Our group
consists of 3 professors, 3-6 other Ph.D. scientists and 6-10 graduate
students. All of our graduates had job offers, often more than one, well before
the graduation. Jobs opportunities for
talented graduates in animal breeding are excellent at this time; read an
editorial or another
one on shortages in the field.
Who are we looking
for?
We are looking for potential Master and Ph.D. students who are genuinely interested in academic work and who can benefit from the excellent scientific atmosphere in our group. We would like to have students who enjoy working on challenging research programs and who would represent our group well at meetings and conferences. We expect students to fully focus on their studies; read the code for graduate students.
Requirements for
admissions
See the animal and dairy science page of UGA on how to apply. The most important requirements are GRE and TOEFL (for nonnative speakers of English). Both tests are administered worldwide; sample tests are available at http://www.gre.com and http://www.toefl.com. We found that successful graduate students have quantitative part of GRE at least 600.
Assistantships
Assistantships and scholarships are available to qualified applicants.
Athens and
environment
Athens has lots of cultural events and is considered an attractive place to live. Facilities at University of Georgia are first rate; the sports center is one of the biggest and the best in USA, cafeterias win national prizes, our building is situated just next to a lake + nature trails. A rich academic life at UGA also includes talks by famous people visiting campus including presidential candidates.
